Space invaders was one of the earliest shooting games, created by Tomohiro Nishikado drawing inspiration from the likes of other games such as Breakout and films of the time such as Star Wars (well its in space at least). Space INvaders helped give the video games industry more credibility and moved it from a novelty to a bona fide industry.

Space Invaders first appeared on home consoles back in 1980 on the Atari 2600, and has since spawned endless sequels, remakes and rip offs, even appearing on the Nintendo Wii as 'Space Invaders Get Even' where this time the player gets to control the invaders.

Due to the wonders of the Interweb you no longer need something as fancy as an Atari 2600 to play Space Invaders. You can now play Space Invaders online!
